How to delete your Amazon account and data

Amazon lets you close your account and delete your personal information in one request. It is permanent, and it affects far more than shopping, so it is worth a few minutes of preparation.

Quick answer

Use Amazon's Close Your Amazon Account page, pick a reason, check the box, and close. Amazon then emails or texts you, and you must confirm within five days or nothing happens. Closing can't be undone and wipes out everything tied to that login, including Kindle books, Prime, digital purchases, and gift card balances.

Step 1: Before you close

Step 2: Close your account and delete your data

  1. Sign in and go to Amazon's Close Your Amazon Account page (search for it in Amazon's help, or find it under Account & Lists > Your Account).
  2. Review the list of products and services that will be affected.
  3. Choose a reason from the menu, check the box confirming you want to permanently close your account and delete your data, and select Close my account.
  4. Watch for Amazon's email or text message and confirm the request within five days.

The closure applies to every Amazon site worldwide that uses the same login. If you have more than one Amazon account, repeat these steps for each.

Your legal right to deletion

If you live in a state with a consumer privacy law, such as California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, Minnesota, or Oregon, Amazon generally has to honor your deletion request and respond within the deadline your state sets, though it can keep records the law requires, such as tax and transaction records. See what your state's law requires.

Amazon is probably not the only one

Most people have dozens of companies holding their information, from old shopping accounts to apps they've forgotten. DataTrail scans your inbox (read-only) to find them all, flags the ones with data breaches, and writes the deletion requests for you.
