How to delete your LendingTree data and stop lender calls

LendingTree is a marketplace: when you ask for loan or insurance quotes, your information goes to lenders and partners who then contact you. Here is how to limit that sharing and ask for deletion.

Quick answer

Call LendingTree at 1-888-272-1355 to limit how it shares your information, and use the Your Privacy Choices link at the bottom of lendingtree.com to opt out of sale and targeted ads. For deletion, call 1-800-505-7916 or email the privacy address in its State Law Privacy Notice. Information from loan requests is covered by federal financial privacy law, so LendingTree generally doesn't have to delete it.

Why lenders keep calling

When you submit a quote request, LendingTree shares it with lenders and other companies in its network so they can make you offers. Its privacy notice says some sharing with financial partners for joint marketing can't be limited, but sharing with outside companies to market to you can be.

Step 1: Limit sharing

Step 2: Stop the calls from lenders

Lenders that already got your information are separate companies. When one calls, tell it to put you on its internal do-not-call list, and ask it to delete your information. You can also register your number at donotcall.gov.

Step 3: Ask LendingTree to delete your data

LendingTree verifies your identity with at least three pieces of information that match its records. Its notice says state privacy laws don't apply to information covered by the federal Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, which includes information from loan and insurance requests. Website and marketing data may still be deletable.

Your legal right to deletion

If you live in a state with a consumer privacy law, such as California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, Minnesota, or Oregon, LendingTree generally has to respond to your deletion request within the deadline your state sets, but information from loan and insurance requests is covered by the federal GLBA and is generally exempt. See what your state's law requires.

LendingTree is probably not the only one

Most people have dozens of companies holding their information, from old shopping accounts to apps they've forgotten. DataTrail scans your inbox (read-only) to find them all, flags the ones with data breaches, and writes the deletion requests for you.
