Quick answer
Download every past tax return you want to keep, then sign in to your Intuit Account, open the data privacy section, and request deletion. Deleting cancels all Intuit licenses and subscriptions and can take up to 90 days. Don't create a new Intuit Account with the same email during that time.
Step 1: Download your tax returns
Save a PDF of every return you might need. Many people keep returns for at least several years in case of IRS questions, loan applications, or amended returns. Once your data is deleted, Intuit says it can't get it back.
Step 2: Check what else uses this login
The same Intuit Account covers TurboTax, Credit Karma, and QuickBooks. Deleting your data cancels all licenses and subscriptions on it.
Step 3: Request deletion
- Sign in to your Intuit Account.
- Open the data privacy section and choose the option to delete your data.
- Confirm your delete request.
Can't sign in? Intuit's privacy site has a "Manage your data" path to find accounts linked to your email and send a request.
Deletion can take up to 90 days. Don't create a new Intuit Account with the same email during that time, or the new account may be deleted too.
Your legal right to deletion
If you live in a state with a consumer privacy law, such as California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, Minnesota, or Oregon, Intuit generally has to honor your deletion request and respond within the deadline your state sets, though it may keep records it is legally required to keep. See what your state's law requires.
TurboTax is probably not the only one
Most people have dozens of companies holding their information, from old shopping accounts to apps they've forgotten. DataTrail scans your inbox (read-only) to find them all, flags the ones with data breaches, and writes the deletion requests for you.
