Quick answer
If you have a Facebook account, Messenger is deleted when you delete your Facebook account. If you want the opposite, to leave Facebook but keep chatting, deactivate Facebook instead of deleting it and keep using Messenger. If you have a Messenger-only account with no Facebook profile, delete it in Messenger under Settings > Accounts Center.
If you have a Facebook account
Messenger uses your Facebook account, so deleting Facebook deletes Messenger too. Follow our Facebook deletion guide. Your messages stay in your friends' inboxes after you leave.
If you want to quit Facebook but keep Messenger
Deactivate your Facebook account instead of deleting it. When you deactivate, Facebook offers to keep Messenger active, so people can still message you while your Facebook profile is hidden. This keeps your data with Meta, though, so it's a step back from Facebook rather than leaving.
If you have a Messenger-only account
Messenger lets you delete a Messenger profile that isn't connected to a Facebook profile. In the Messenger app:
- Open the menu, tap Settings, then See more in Accounts Center.
- Find your Messenger profile under the account settings and choose Deactivation or deletion.
- Select your profile, choose Delete account, and enter your password to confirm.
Before you go
- Download photos and conversations you want through Accounts Center > Your information and permissions > Download your information.
- Tell your group chats where else to find you.
- Messages you sent stay visible to the people you sent them to.

Your legal right to deletion
If you live in a state with a consumer privacy law, such as California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, Minnesota, or Oregon, Meta generally has to honor your deletion request and respond within the deadline your state sets. See what your state's law requires.
Messenger is probably not the only one
Most people have dozens of companies holding their information, from old shopping accounts to apps they've forgotten. DataTrail scans your inbox (read-only) to find them all, flags the ones with data breaches, and writes the deletion requests for you.
